I'll try to organize my thoughts and not skip ideas. We all know domainers are people who would rather save a buck than risk. What Domaining.com did wrong so far was that the prices are too high for what advertisers can spend, at least for now. The only exceptions are the sponsored listings, those prices seem fair to me and that's the reason why sponsored listings have performed better than paid ads.
A brief recap of what happened with the paid ads so far.
1... it started with a sidebar which was filled with advertising. First PremiumDomains ads, then BargainDomains ads always along with paid ads. Now the problem is that the prices of those domains are more in line with what end users would pay, not domainers. Domainers want steals when they buy and end user prices when they sell, that's the truth. Unfortunately...
2... then the right part of the site was populated with Mocus domains. Those domains are valuable and I won't deny that but the same thing happened, they had end user price tags...
3... now the right part contains several BargainDomains listings. The same problem, the prices would have to go down a lot for those domains to be true bargains.
Now the question is what can be done. I would do one thing and one thing only. Remove BargainDomains from the left part of the site and add cheap ad spots, many of them. Make it so any serious advertiser could afford them without thinking twice. Not just 2-3 ads priced at $1,000 monthly, rather 9 ads priced at $300 monthly each. See if that works, it should. Nobody can resist the urge to test if the price is right. By adding more ads and asking for less, you will keep everyone happy.
In my opinion, there's no point trying to reinvent the wheel. Domainers want cheap adverting. I know it, probably everyone who is reading this forum knows it. If they want cheap advertising, give them cheap advertising. Make the banners smaller, add more of them and decrease the prices. A complicated problem usually has a simple solution and for Domaining.com, I can't think of anything that would work better than this.
