Lightbulb Think of a Monetization Approach for Domaining.com, Win $50 and a $95 Vector Logo

No further explanations needed: if you have an original monetization approach in mind for Domaining.com, post it here. Francois will review your ideas and pick a winner after the contest ends (next Tuesday at 3 PM EST). Here are a few of the things you can recommend:

1) a certain ad placement strategy
2) an approach which will help Domaining.com attract advertisers
3) an approach which will help Domaining.com keep advertisers

The list could go on and on, let your imagination run wild

I'll try to organize my thoughts and not skip ideas. We all know domainers are people who would rather save a buck than risk. What Domaining.com did wrong so far was that the prices are too high for what advertisers can spend, at least for now. The only exceptions are the sponsored listings, those prices seem fair to me and that's the reason why sponsored listings have performed better than paid ads.

A brief recap of what happened with the paid ads so far.

1... it started with a sidebar which was filled with advertising. First PremiumDomains ads, then BargainDomains ads always along with paid ads. Now the problem is that the prices of those domains are more in line with what end users would pay, not domainers. Domainers want steals when they buy and end user prices when they sell, that's the truth. Unfortunately...

2... then the right part of the site was populated with Mocus domains. Those domains are valuable and I won't deny that but the same thing happened, they had end user price tags...

3... now the right part contains several BargainDomains listings. The same problem, the prices would have to go down a lot for those domains to be true bargains.

Now the question is what can be done. I would do one thing and one thing only. Remove BargainDomains from the left part of the site and add cheap ad spots, many of them. Make it so any serious advertiser could afford them without thinking twice. Not just 2-3 ads priced at $1,000 monthly, rather 9 ads priced at $300 monthly each. See if that works, it should. Nobody can resist the urge to test if the price is right. By adding more ads and asking for less, you will keep everyone happy.

In my opinion, there's no point trying to reinvent the wheel. Domainers want cheap adverting. I know it, probably everyone who is reading this forum knows it. If they want cheap advertising, give them cheap advertising. Make the banners smaller, add more of them and decrease the prices. A complicated problem usually has a simple solution and for Domaining.com, I can't think of anything that would work better than this.

I agree with you, but my initial idea was of cheaper advertising in the newsletter... in truth more valuable for me than banner ads (but they are also good).

I think Francois should actively reach out (or have a sales person reach out) and contact large domain companies.

Domaining.com has HIGHLY targetted traffic. Nearly all of the readers are portfolio owners, or are looking to become portfolio owners.

If Francois sells a banner ad in the newsletter, and sells a couple of sidebar ads, I think he would be on his way to turning a profit.

Thumbs up

This is an interesting contest but the 'points' is subjective. It is up to Francois.

Will think about it while having a meal

A banner ad is seen by everyone, while newsletters are only seen by those who subscribed. I imagine a lot of people visit Domaining.com frequently but haven't subscribed yet, it's hard to compare these two possible traffic sources.

This seems to me like a challenge and I really want to help. Give me a day or two and I'll think of something original, my neurons need some time to process the information

I don't think it's necessary to be original, it could help but it's not necessary. The problem right now can be resolved through simple economics, as I explained above.

Originality is always a good thing. I personally try to be original every day in all of my activities. I read your post and it's good but maybe aside from accepting lower prices he could do something original to make additional income. Maybe a combination between what you said and originality. I'm in favor of accepting lower prices but I think he can try to do at least something crazy
